Evaluation on skills

In AS media we were told to complete a short video, this gave me skills to use the video camera. but when it came to filming in more complex detail my skills at working a camera needed to be better. for example in our finished video i shot footage of Matt standing up on a hill this shows wide depth of field and then i zoom out and it goes, this is something i would not have learnt from doing this project. i also learnt basic skills like how to set up a tripod and use studio lighting if i needed to. i liked the idea of using the studio lights as you could place different coloured paper over the lights and it would reflect onto the individual as a different colour. this looked good as its an unusual effect that you cannot do outside. in my research for ideas of music videos i have looked at how complex and how much money each must cost to make. this is interesting as it is a good comparison to look at how we used no money and our videos are not up to the same standards. and it seems outstanding that the money would be used towards these videos to advertise a song. other skills i have used involve programmes and software on the apple mac computers, at first it seemed like something i would not be able to grasp but after about 15 minutes of using them to order the footage it became easy to me. i would like to use it again in the future, as it is exciting to see the finished piece along with the audio. for alot of my research i used the Internet with search engines such as google. this took me to websites that are made by fans and this showed me ways in which the band are presented and portrayed. i found out that before the task i would not have wanted or felt it necessary to make a storyboard but by mid way through i realised it was vital to have one as it helped us see the finished piece and made us understand and be organised about how much more we have to do.

Designs for my advert

This is my first design for an advert. i want to keep it basic and make sure the main focus is the writing, so this would be the name of the song, the name of the artist, and when its coming out. i am trying to advertise the digi pack so somewhere i must include the fact that it comes with the video. for this first design i have used the mask as the photo, and thought it would be left in colour RGB. i thought this would be better as it would stand out more because the mask is red, blue and purple. if i was to make it black and white i would need to focus more on using photo shop to make certain parts shadow each other so that its still interesting without colour. I have put the date very large along the bottom, just below centre point. i did this as its one of the first places the audience will look when seeing my advert. and just above that i have put a magazine review, also at the top i have done another. good magazine examples to use would be Q and NME. these are good because they support the specific genre that Bloc Party fit into. The name of the artist is in very big clear font, this is so its obvious to the reader straight away what they are looking at.

This is my second design for an advert. this time i have used a picture i took in a local woods nearby where i live. i took this because it was an interesting and busy location, which had alot going on in it; so it fits in with our themes. i.e confusion and panic. the only problem with using this was that it isn't taken at the same place we filmed our video. although its not immediately obvious when looking at the image. but still i felt it was good to keep it recognisable. The font i want to use on photo shop is called Myriad Pro. i chose this font because it looks traditional but the smoothed corners keep it modernised; which is good as bloc party are a current band.
i like this shot in general as some points show depth of field in the front of the shot. this place where i took the shot was the same place as the abandoned bumper cars. it would have been cool to have shot our video there so we could have had a circus type theme, and Matt could have been wearing a clown mask. this would have allowed me to create an entirely different advert as it would be all about colours and childish writing. this would have been to create on photoshop as there are alot of tools i could use to create unrealistic points in the image. which contrasts with the image i have chosen above as its a solid shot meaning there are alot of layers but none would look right adjusted; unless it was in the smallest way.

This image used in my final design is the one i like the most. its a picture of Matt sitting in the woods on a chair which already is unrealistic and unexpected. as well as this he has put the mask of the back of his head so to the audience it seems like hes sat back to font, but it has a metaphorical meaning that the mask is only inside his head and all the time he is being chased around the woods it is all in his mind. i have the same information as the first one, as i felt there was enough information on the advert. i didn't want to overload it otherwise it would be too packed and look messy. it would be good if i could have taken this image with a slow shutter speed, meaning the camera would have captured Matt blurred if he moved his head. but i was limited in camera choice and on the day i had to use my mobile. i also would have liked to have used depth of field and composition to darken the shot and blur out the background leaving Matt strongly in focus so that it could show him being alone in the woods, and everything not being normal.

Final Video

When creating my video i filmed a selection of various shots, some of which were not used. I have displayed them in my blog as still shots. i did this by using the programme move maker on the apple mac laptop. getting the shot from the video was done by pausing it at the relevant point, and saving it as a jpeg/still shot/image. this was then saved on the college computer where it was then transferred onto a memory stick an uploaded on to my blog.

The three images i have used for my unused footage are below.

1. This is of a shot we did of some logs in the woods. we didn't use this footage because it was far too light and the image did not fit in with the dark theme we were trying to portray. although we could have darkened it in film cut pro, we decided the suns reflection changed the look too much. e.g lighter patches. another reason for this was because it was going to be part of the introduction in the video, where we set the scene by using establishing shots. but this is a part of the woods we were not going to incorporate into our video so we felt the trees were irrelevant to our video.

2. This shot below is similar to another shot we used half way into our video. this shot is different because the camera angle is different, we shot a new one because not alot happened in the old one. e.g Matt walked across the top of the hill but it was an easy shot that we could have filmed using depth of field and made it more interesting. for the new version we placed the camera behind a tree and filmed through the leaves, this made it a more realistic point of view shot as there was a sense of hiding and running away. which was good for our theme.

3. When filming our video we planned to film the stream and capture a duck swimming along and then we were going to edit and slow it down as it flew away. when it came to filming the duck it was impossible to get it to fly away when we were actually filming, so when it eventually did fly away. we missed it. meaning the shot of the duck swimming along, despite alot of depth of field and strong use of composition it was pointless to our story in the video. meaning it was a shot we could not use. unless it was for a last resort and we had space that needed filling, which did not happen.

Below is the final video. (which is also on memory stick as the quality is bad)

Feedback

I asked people that would listen to this band for feedback about the video i have made.

feedback was positive although i feel this is because most of them were my friends and would not tell me the criticisms anyway.

first person i asked said: i like the way you have changed the speed of your video throughout, as this makes it look unique and fit with the songs lyrics. i.e war war war war

the second person i asked said:i like the use of the mask it is a vital part to your video as you wanted to achieve a scary/creepy theme.

the third person said: its good how you managed to stick to your storyboard, at some points you could have maybe introduced new footage to carry the excitement further.

this was all the feedback i managed to get i think it would have been a good idea to put it up on YouTube or facebook so that i could get a wider range of people commenting on the video. people who i did not know would have been good so that they were not scared to say what they really thought of the video. on facebook i could link the persons comments to a specific stereotype that they appear to be e.g indie, emo, goth, chav. etc. this would give me an idea of who my video appears to and if it has reached the people i want it to. i.e bloc party fans/indie fans. although i am disappointed i didn't think to put it on facebook, other people who did do this had problems with the quality. so this would have meant they could not see it anyway, or it would have taken along time to upload.

Final ideas for Filming

As Hellingly is due to be knocked down and we are not allowed to access the building for a long and safe period of time. we have had to change our video ideas entirely. this means moving away from the neon and bright coloured theme. we have decided to change it to dull colours and use a woodland area out the back of college. this is more practical as it means being able to film in college time without having to travel around it also means the college equipment is easier to access. e.g cameras, batteries and tapes.
Even though Hellingly was not the only location we could have used to create the crazy futuristic look we originally wanted it was still hard to find anywhere close. even abandoned places in Brighton are not ideal.
So despite wanting to follow our plans we changed them to produce a video in time and with guarantee it could happen. The basic story line for our video now is Matt (a group member) will walk around a woods and get the impression that someone is following him and then he will switch to wearing a mask. the whole thing is filmed in a woods and it is like he has a split personality as he is both the man in the mask and the one without the mask. the whole theme and idea is to create fear and confusion. this is helped by the location (woods).
We have got ideas from videos by chase and status and from horror films, these clips can be edited and recreated throughout the video. Matt will be the only person in the video, as we dont want the audience to think that Matt is being we want them to realise its all in his head.
Ideas from films
The Blair Witch Project
Halloween 1
Kidulthood
Texas Chain Saw Massacre
All of these films show a wide range of fearful shots that we could use.
We will be filming in the woods, this is a contrast to the original plan we had as now we are focusing on using dull colours. The only real sense of colour we will have is from the mask in our video. Still keeping to Bloc Partys audience demographics shown in our pitch we will make the person in our video wear skinny jeans and a hoody with a brand; basic clothes that would be worn by stereotypical listeners. he will also wear plimsolls, so that it sticks to the reality that the man in the mask is still in fact Matt. we can show this by doing a close up on the shoes in the video.

Digi pack Advert and analysis of other adverts

Before i created my advert i had to compare and use different artists posters for advertisement so that i could see patterns behind their colours and similarities to things such as photos on their album cover.

For my first comparison i used Kings of Leon. this advert for their new album consists of the exact same photo they used on their album cover. this is a good idea, as it allows the audience to go into a shop see the picture and recognise their cd. where as if it was a different photo, the buyers would need to look harder in order to find it meaning it stands out less and lacks a signature image for the band. the image they have used has been edited in order to be individual and stand out. e.g the way they have taken apart the face and when putting it back together in this image, it doesn't fit. the background colour is green with yellow font, but it still looks simple and tidy. this is key for this genre as most artists with the 'indie' title, like to appear minimalistic. the way they have the photo so unconnected makes it have key points in the image. for example the eye of the individual stands out most to me, making it seem like a connection to the audience.

Secondly i used pendulums advert. this is a good example as it shows how the genre of music can be expressed by an image. they have used a shape that relates to an actual pendulum, and have coloured it in a range of colours to make it seem busy and exciting. these are good themes, as the people buying their music will feel these feelings when listening to their songs. the image appears to look like a maze, which may metaphorically relate to getting lost in their music. in the centre of the image it seems like someone is trapped or lost in the centre of the maze meaning that perhaps once you get into pendulums music you will not stop liking it. linking to 'getting trapped' in the maze. this image is on their advert as its their album cover, again this is good because its recognisable to anyone who sees the advert and may want to buy the cd.

Below is the advert to my digi pack.

i did not use the same photo as i did for my front cover of the digi pack, i changed it because it want a strong enough image. but it still relates as i was able to still incorporate the mask and let the themes flow through. on my front cover for the digi pack, it shows the mask blowing in the trees in the woods, this is a strong image as i have managed photoshop it to make it seem like a 'whirlpool' so it could metaphorically mean the audience will be sucked into the music from this artist. i have carried this technique into the advert by using the 'twirl' tool to blur the face (mask) i did this so it looks unrealistic and something out of a modern fantasy theme. relating to the fear theme. i did this by using the wave tool on photoshop. changing the amount of wave lines and to what extent the wave 'waves' changes the strength of the blur. i didn't blur it too much as i wanted the mask to be recognisable. i also made it black and white so it looks similar to the cd cover.
i have displayed information on the front, such as: ratings from magazines that would talk about bands in the same genre as bloc party, i.e Q and NME. i also wrote the songs name, the artists name and when it will be released. this is basic information that is key to masking a successful advert, as the readers need to be told what the product is. below you can also see an example of the type of font i wanted to use on my advert. i chose this because it looks 'scary' and was under the theme 'distort' on dafont.com. it was simple to download these fonts at college, it involved saving it to their C drive, and then saving it into their fonts folder and opening into the programme you were working with. but i did not end up using it for my advert as i felt it took away the emphasis of the photo, and i wanted that to be the main focus. i chose the white font on the black background as i wanted it to be clear and simple and these colours create that effect as they contrast each other well. i displayed information such as it includes the video, as i am advertising the digi pack not just the song.

Final digi pack

This is the final for the front of my digi pack, i used photoshop cs4 to create this, i got this programme from the Internet on a trial and it was good because i was able to use different tools to create a unique look for my image. I had not used this programme before so it was hard at first but then i got used to certain parts and used them to work with the theme i had chosen even though this meant not being able to get the most out of the software, as there are so many complex things i could have done which would make my design better. In this image above, i have used grey scale. This meant taking the colour out of the photo and making it only black and white. I did this because it makes it simpler, and allows it to be dull and dreary, fitting in with the theme of darkness and being alone in a woods; impacting fear. I also used the text tool to write the name of the artist and the name of the song, this was information i had to have on the front so it was informing the target audience of the product they were buying. i went for white font as it contrasted with the black background, i also did it in a simple font that has similarities to the text bloc party themselves use on their other various album covers. i made the name of the artist bigger than the name of the song as i thought it was more vital that it stood out. As i had made a 'signature' font and recognisable style for the bands name and song, i made sure i used the same look each time i wrote either 'bloc party' or 'ares'. the easiest way to do this was to copy and paste it into the new file. Using other tools i was able to enhance the focus centre point by creating a sphere like shape bubble in the photo. this pulled the image forward and made it appear closer and clearer. On top of this i 'twirled' the image, making it blurred and twisted. which works with the theme of distortion and madness behind the mask. i changed the contrast and brightness in the image to start with as it was too light to work with, i adjusted the brightness making it darker and then i changed the contrast so it worked with the light, appearing sharper and bolder overall.
Below shows examples of how i did this, using print screens.

Next i had to create two inside photos that would be in my digi pack. i went for the same theme, but i didn't want to use grey scale throughout the whole thing so i tried to avoid it although i felt that in some images it looked better as there was either bad lighting on the original or there was too much going on so it needed to look more basic. for these images, i used alot of the tools i used for the main cover. i.e twirl, blur, brightness, contrast and the sphere focus.

i then used other editing techniques such as pinch. this makes the image dip or slant in certain ways that helps make it appear dipped (downhill/ on a slope) or bulge out as if it were on a hill. this was good as it makes the mask appear low and hidden, (in the dip) as if it were buried away metaphorically in the characters head. (from the video)

i wanted to keep the mask in this first shot in colour, as it appears this way throughout the video, so changing it would make it appear irrelevant. also i like how it contrasts against the green leaves. i blurred the middle to make it appear mixed in, this gives the idea of it being part of everyday life and as if it fits in with the woodland atmosphere. which is of course not case making it confusing and surreal.

For the second image on the inside of the digi pack i made sure that i kept it in colour also, it looks unique because of the way i have blurred the character in towards the mask hanging from the tree. this gives the literal and metaphorical idea of him being drawn and controlled by the mask. it also makes us think that beign inside and wearing the mask makes him feel like hes in a different world, a very strange one at that. i placed the lyrics down the side of the image, which meant it didn't take any focus away from the photo. and at the same time it gives the audience more to look at as the sides of the image are only of the trees so it makes it a little more interesting if they are able to read the lyrics. the lyrics to the song are important to understanding our interpretations and ideas, for the video.

Below is the back of my digi pack. this particular shot is in the music video as well as being on the cover.

i used the same font for the bands name as i did on the front, still keeping it white making it recognisable and simple. i also put the song name as track one and then put track two as another song by bloc party. this was 'flux' finally as this is a digi pack i said track 3 is a video of Ares. this has also been displayed and advertised on my poster. in this image i didn't change alot except the size of the character in the centre, and then i selected the mask only by using the 'lasoo' tool and managed to blur and twirl the mask. i did this so it distorted the image and made it something out of the ordinary; something you would fear.

Feedback

When i had finished my digi pack i asked people i knew to give me feedback on how they thought it looked above is a print screen of their answers.

the first person i asked said:

1. i like how it is very distorted this keeps the images looking different and unique from other album covers. this also shows a good use of photoshop. using colours such as black and white means they contrast off each other so this makes the writing clear to see.

2. i like how it is abstract, and that you have matched your advert to your digi pack. e.g colours and grey scale.

3. its good how youve put songs on the back of your digi pack, it makes it appear more realistic; also the mask in most shots helps it flow.

4. i dont like the way the image of the mask in leaves looks, i do not think it fits in with the other three.

again, it would have been good to get more feedback; like i wanted for the video. so that i could have learnt more from the audience i was aiming it at. so i would have liked to of put them on facebook and get a wider reply.

Evaluation of camera work, editing and video

Our music video consisted of working in an area that was not most suitable for steady and precise camera shots so we had to work with that and incorporate it into our video. This was easy due to the theme we had chosen at the start. e.g fear and confusion. we could capture this idea by shaking the camera alot more than it naturally would when walking or just holding it. for example in a shot we used in the video the main character holds the camera in position for an extreme close up and looks around whilst moving the camera which gives the impression of him being followed or watched. at points in the video when we wanted to film a tracking shot, we did bring along a tripod but we found it easier to hold the camera and film as it allowed us to follow faster and capture the correct amount of the characters body in the frame. Even though we worked with the movement of the camera the best we could, we avoided using the zoom controls as it enhances the shake even more. When we needed to lay the camera low, and keep it to the ground it was impossible to hold and control so i used natural support such as someones bag, so the camera was kept safe off the ground and steady. Despite only using the tripod once or twice, we were told how to set up and attach the camera to it. Although when outside it seemed to be a more difficult task, setting up the stand of the tripod was easy, pulling out the legs until they were full and of the same height. But then attaching the camera onto the stand was more complex as getting it into the grasp until it clicked firmly was hard as if it wasn't attached, it would not be firm and would move as much as if you were to hold it by hand. Another downfall to not setting up the tripod correctly, was that it stopped you from using the handle to move it around slowly and smoothly, this it what prevented us from using the tripod as much as we may have wanted to. So if i was to do this project again, or alot of camera work i would focus on understanding how to set up the tripod correctly.
Camera Settings
When filming we had to change the camera settings depending on how light or dark the area was. this was changed by the white balance, as this changes the consistency and tone in the footage. If we wanted to adjust the effect of the exposure to either darken or lighten footage, or impact the sharpness behind the footage we could change the shutter speed and this also allows a narrow or wide depth of field, depending on how you use it. another tool on the camera that can be used to control the amount of light coming in to the camera and also used for adjusting exposure so its darker or lighter, is called the aperture.
if we did not want to change the cameras setting to how it automatically turns on from not being used, it will be auto focus settings, this is manual focus. this setting can be problematic when filming because the camera does not know what you are aiming for and will shift focus to whatever comes into frame. manual focus allows you to set the focus precisely before filming the shot, and when mastered it allows you to shoot more complex shots such as pull focus or to achieve a narrow depth of field.
When our group were filming we had to make sure we setup the camera well, we did this so our shots could appear darker as when we filmed it was not dark outside. we tried to film in the evening so there was less light, as light on the camera interfered with certain objects. i.e sunlight shining through trees gave the idea of it being happy and bright. This was not the look we wanted, also if sunlight was to shine onto the characters face it would interfere with the lense, and maybe cut off certain points in the shot.

Communication on set

Before shooting our video outside in the woods, we had to sort out a way we could keep our shots in order so that when it came to putting them together it was easy to understand how they had to be edited. e.g shot 1, shot 2 and shot 3. take 1, take 2 and take 3. this helped because at the beginning of playing the tape you could see what take worked and was the final shot. although at times it was not ideal to be using these paper clappers as the weather was not always the best and if there was rain then they would get wet. and we would want to move around as quickly as possible meaning we were more likely to get the shot right first time. another thing we used before filming was a shooting script. this is very similar to a storyboard but it does not involve images, more just writing out plans for the picture, audio, time and the number shot. i.e shot 4 will be of establishing shots, will last 13 seconds and run through the first 2 lines of the first verse. this is good to have as its more organised than a storyboard, as a storyboard involves drawing a lot of images that most of the time are irrelevant to how you want it to look and how it does look at the end.

(My storyboard can be found in a separate blog) Before filming we did make a storyboard this was helpful when it came to filming as we needed to fill up 4 minutes of footage and at points we may run out of ideas, as we chose to film purely in the woods. we were originally thinking of using the college's studio, to project images onto the wall so that it has a change of set. but the we realised it seemed irrelevant to our storyline so we did not do it. in terms of following the storyboard i think we did this. before we changed our ideas completely we did have a storyboard that we would not have followed. but in making this new one we followed it pretty much shot by shot. although there were shots we could not do such as, a shot through another persons legs. this could not happen as there was only 2 people out filming and one had to be in it and the other had to film and as we were in a woods it was not practical to put the camera on the floor, so we had to miss out that shot. but the storyboard helped when we got a mind block, as we already had loads of ideas written down. for example at the beginning of each verse, it starts with a word being repeated 4 times, so this was a part of the video where we saw potential for repetition in the shot. we chose to do Matt from each head angle in a close up. before we filmed this we could not think of what to do, but then looking back at the storyboard we realised we already had ideas, so we were able to film quickly knowing it would fit with the music and work. we over estimated the amount of shots we would need so we had extra footage we did not use, which was okay as it left us choosing shots which look best rather than just using stuff that didn't look good. We managed to film our video over three shoots, one was just to get a feel of the area we had chosen. at this point we also took our establishing shots as it was flooded so it looked interesting and unique. then the second time we went out was a week after and this time was used to film half of it. then the following week we were able to film the rest of our video. we found it hard to pick times when all of our group wanted to film, so each time we found it was just 2 or 3 members of our group. which was not ideal as it gave us less chance to produce more complex shots, and also left us with less ideas from more group members. my job as filming and Matt's job was being in the shots, as he was the man in mask. when the camera was recording we tried not to talk but this was hard if we wanted to cut the shot early, or something went wrong or just generally when i was filming if i was to trip or something. before we recorded the shot, i would speak to Matt and make sure he knew what he was doing, or if it was his idea then he would talk me through it and this way i would know when to stop recording or to zoom in etc. although most of the time it was self explanatory, if Matt was far away or walked out of the shot, i would follow him. i had to figure out for myself what was the best way to film it as Matt could not see for himself.

As we wanted our video to look scary, there was not alot of music videos that we could get ideas from, it was more from films. above you can see i have matched clips from our video to clips from other films. the films i was able to use for examples were: The Blair with project, Halloween 1 and kidulthood. the first image you see of Matt standing at the top of the hill, is from Halloween i used this as its a long shot taken from a low angle, this shows him having power and being higher than the person watching and looking up at him. which is good as the man in the mask is following and scaring the person not in the mask. (matt) we wanted this so he seems superior. another shot is the one from kidulthood and from Blair witch project, in both of these films the shots are extreme close ups we did this filming ours too and we got Matt to hold the camera himself so that it shakes and moves. we wanted this to happen so that he seems scared and portrays the idea of being alone. in kidulthood it is filmed at night and uses light to emphasise the shot, e.g cars going past creates the idea that alot is going on and the audience may appear confused. this shot is a good way to show emotion to the audience as they have to think about what is happening and why the camera has cut to this point of view. the final shot above is of the woods, we used this in our establishing shots also in long shots taken from a point of view when walking around. we got this idea from the blair which project as this itself is a scary film, as they are trying to run away from something in the woods. so we wanted this idea to set the scene. we sped this up so we could fit in more footage to show that Matt is completely alone.

Final cut pro
When we had finished filming we had to put all of our footage onto the apple mac computer. we did this by using the leads to plug the camera into the laptop. then we used the log and capture tool to upload it. this capture all our footage and places it into final cut pro. at this point you can play your footage in the programme. you pick out the bits you want by pressing 'ctrl i' to start capturing and then 'ctrl o' to stop capturing and dragging that over into the 'overwrite' box uploads it onto the timeline. you do this will all the parts you want and drag them into the time slot you want them play. below is a print screen of what film cut pro looks like on screen.

As we uploaded the parts we wanted into film cut pro we found it easier to edit them as we went, because if we wanted to speed them up it would change how much time it took up. i.e a shot is 13 seconds with 100 as a speed setting. (this is the manual normal speed of which you would film at) then if you were to change that to 300 it would dramatically speed it up making it appear 1/3 of the time. so would make the shot around 4seconds. if i was to decrease the speed from 100 to 60. it would increase 13 seconds up to 25 seconds.

So we used the speed tool as we went along. we also used the 'cut' tool to decrease the length or cut off parts of the footage we did not need after we had put it into the timeline. When we opened up final cut pro we had to add in the audio. this was the song 'ares' so we did that by: file>import and clicking on the song. when filming if we happened to speak in the footage we were using we could still upload the footage and delete the audio, as that appears on a separate timeline. problems we found were that when speeding up selected parts, we had to move them up the timeline to a place where there was no footage, in order for it to allow us to change it and then place it back where it was supposed to be. this was inconvenient as sometimes we lost where to put it. towards the end of editing we thought about using other tools such as putting the footage back wards so it seems like Matt is walking backwards, but we were unable to find the tool that allowed this. we tried mirroring the image, as there was a distort tool under effects. we also tried 'fish eye' this made the image appear bolder and closer in the centre. this was not a good tool for us as the image did not have a centre to it. this tool would be good for an image that held a strong rule of three, as it would have a distinctive middle point/line. at 2.34 of our video there is a slight editing fault in the way we have joined the shots together this was a fault in cutting the first capture too short; which should have been changed. but as the next shot is a still image of Matt's feet, it is less noticeable than i could have been. also in film cut pro you were able to copy and paste footage from the timeline, this was good as we could use some bits again so they look exactly the same. for example. at 2.07 of the video we use the same shot four times in a row to fit with the music and create an effect of repetition. this is of Matt looking around and turning away. i like the way this looks; it seems like a record that is stuck but visual. also in film cut pro we were able to make certain shots darker or lighter, we chose not to do this as we liked the lighting as it was. this was so that we could clearly see Matt because if we changed the lighting to look too dark it may lessen the impact of the colour on the mask. the colour on the mask is good because its unrealistic. at the end of our audio for the song it appeared to carry on into another song, so we used to cutting tool to cut the audio where the song ended so that our last shot which we timed with the end beat had full impact.

Throughout our music video we did use examples of films scary scenes, but we did not use any ideas from many music videos, which i think was a bad idea for us as it meant we came to a mental block at some points. but in a way as we chose to do a video with a story line, the films were helpful. if we went for more of an abstract theme i think music videos would have helped us more. as our song is quite aggressive and has alot of depth so appears fairly abstract in the lyrics itself we could have used modern day music of different genres such as: drum and bass, dub step and dance. as they have more edgy videos, so their camera angles and techniques would have been interesting to look at. they would have also been fun to recreate. although in our video we tried to include as many camera techniques as possible, such as: rule of three, establishing shots, mid shots, close ups, long shots, point of view shots, low angle shots, high angle shots, and we tried to incorporate canted and titled angles. our music video has a strong story to it, alot like other videos of Bloc Partys this is good as it follows their ideas and would fit in. e.g videos such as Flux and Talons. they work with very dark sets and rely on lighting to make it interesting. so maybe if we did it again with another bloc party song it would be better to have more footage that made it even more confusing and harder to keep up with. this is another thing i learnt from the audiences feedback, that there was not enough happening in the video, that it was all too much the same. looking back on the video i can see this. i feel we were limited with the location we chose and the lack of help from our group. so with what we produced i feel was above expected. the link between our video, my digi pack and advert i think is very clear and relevant. i have kept the mask in all of them, also they were all made in the same location. if someone was to see my advert and then see the video they would recognise the themes and images and instantly put them together. the only thing i may have made a mistake in doing is putting some of the images in grey scale.
